rail Bailouts in the Great Depression.

écrit avec Toby Daglish (Victoria University du Wellington)

U.S. Railroads got loans from the remontage Finance corporation starting in Febru-ary 1932, at below-market rates, primarily to meet interest et principal repayments nous theirdebt. Almost toutes les personnes loan requests to be approved. The rst loan approval the a rail receivedwas linked with a 55 basis mission increase in the credit spreads de its bonds, even after condi-tioning nous observable determinants du credit risk. Auto bene t de receiving a loan at concessionalinterest rates was outweighed passant par the negative cue that thé rm was unable à access creditthrough continual channels. Subsequent RFC loans room weakly connected with reduced credit spreadsfor thé railroad"s bonds. Dangerous grade rail bonds are auto most a ected de news of agovernment loan, those bonds" diffusion increase by over 260 communication points, conversely, investmentgrade bonds" spreads are signification littérale changed.

commercial clusters in the longue run: proof from Million-Rouble tree in China

This paper exploits thé short-lived economic and scientific collaboration between the U.S.S.R. Et China, which led to the restrictions of 156 "Million-Rouble plants" in between 1953 et 1958. Nous isolate exogenous sport in laure decisions en raison de to the relation amoureuse position ns allied et enemy airbases et study the long-run un tube of these factories nous the spatial livré of économiquement activity. While auto "156" program increased structural conversion in cure counties until auto end ns the command-economy era, this far-reaching advantage eroded in the subsequent period. We découvrir the nature of the local spillovers responsible pour this pattern, and provide evidence about auto following externalities: over-specialization, human capital accumulation and competition à la skills, and changes in auto supply of entrepreneurs.

optimal exploration

écrit avec César Martinelli

Consider a decision device who has to choose one of several alternatives, and who is imperfectly informed about thé payoff de each ns them. In each period, auto decision maker has à decide whether to stop and take one de the alternatives, jaune to continuez researching the alternatives. New informations is costly and is never ever conclusive. Nous provide a dynamic programming recette of thé decision maker’s difficulty with one of two people a limited deadline or non deadline, and give necessary and sufficient hachette for research à take place parce que le some prior beliefs about auto alternatives. We montrer that, at least pour short deadlines et situations in which there is a strictly positive probability the decision machine stops browsing in the suivant period under the optimal plan, thé decision machine either explores auto best au lieu de, remplacer and stop after an excellent news, or explores the lundi best alternative and stops after bad news, v the former path being optimal if the decision an equipment is relatively optimistic about auto payoff ns the alternatives. Nous the est différent hand, an example spectacles that searching thé third best alternative can be optimal when over there are much more than three remaining search periods and there is no likelihood of stopping in the suivant period.

massive Migration and Education over a Century: proof from auto Galician Diaspora

This file analyzes the dommage of mass complet on human capital accumulé at beginning over a century. Je examine one of the largest migratoire episodes in the XX century, thé Galician diaspora in Latin America. Using data from different historical sources i build a dunicité database of toutes les personnes Galician villages from 1860 venir today with information on migration, proficiency rates, migrants" associations et their invest at origin. à infer causality I exploit the reality that the distance to a few harbeurs was a vital determinant of émigrer intensity, specifically in times de good economic conditions at destination. Auto results show that in auto short run, complet significantly increased literacy rates tandis que to thé selection du illiterate into complet and an increase in thé stock of literate. In the longue run, migration commander to more schools effronté capita, greater enrolment rates et higher schooling levels. These findings are greatly explained par migrants associations financing the construction of schools, par the return de educated migrants, et by a échanger in la perception about the value du education.

Climate change, social protection, et crop yields: proof from India

écrit avec *

India’s national Rural employed Guarantee act (NREGA), thé world’s largest public works program, has been demonstrated to oui beneficial impacts conditions météorologiques a vast range du outcomes, cible its effects nous agricultural productivity have been relatively understudied (Sukhtankar, 2017). I audit whether NREGA modulates the un tube of adverse weather shocks nous agricultural yields. Ma empirical strategy exploits the staggered roll-out of NREGA and random fluctuations in weather. Making use of nationwide data, i find proof that NREGA renders yields much more sensitive to adverse weather shocks. Auto effects are most pronounced parce que le labor-intensive crops, indicating the labor market effects may drive my results. Ma results indicate that the household-level consumption-smoothing benefits du NREGA need to be balanced against auto challenges to denchères food security that india faces, an especially in the face of climate change. Hence, implementing complementary programs such as investing in enhanced seed varieties, expanding extension services and promoting farm mechanization is critical.

Voting for war. Auto effect of electoral outcomes nous conflict, proof from Colombia

The Colombian problem experienced a dramatic intensification after 2002 as soon as the national government implemented auto Democratic Security policy spearheaded de the Colombian’s Conservative dirigeants Alvaro Uribe. This research examines the direct effects du putting into practice thé Democratic Security policy on local violence in the direction of civilians. A regression discontinuity approach spectacle that the num of civilian victims passant par Guerrilla bands rises substantially after close elections in municipalities where mayors sharing the DS policy won, whereas no effect of the civilian victims de other bands jaune official forces was observed. Empirical evidence suggests that the violence reflects either an anticipation strategy followed by the Guerrilla or a manipur of thé scores de the local offices.

split Behind and Beyond Borders? earnings inequality in Europe, 1980-2017

écrit avec Lucas Chancel, Amory Gethin

This paper estimates the evolution of earnings inequality in 38 European countries from 1980 to 2017 par combining surveys, tax data et national accounts in a methodical manner. Nous develop a harmonized methodology (based nous machine-learning, nonlinear survey calibration et extreme worth theory) in order venir produce homogeneous pre-tax and post-tax income inequality estimates, comparable across countries et coherent v official intérieur income expansion rates. Ours findings disclose that earnings inequalities within European nations increased significantly, if inequalities between countries stayed broadly stabilité over thé period. Oui a result, earnings disparities in Europe oui a whole increased significantly: over thé period, bottom 50% earners saw their incomes prosper four fois slower than thé top 0.001%. Earnings gaps are yet substantially wider et have enhanced much more rapidly in auto United states than in auto old continent. In 1980, Europe et the nous shared similar levels du inequality; in 2017, de contrast, the share of national income accruing venir top 1% earners was two fois higher in auto US. Our findings also contraintes the need for more transparency on inequality statistics in Europe and continued tentative towards auto production, dissemination and analysis of distributional measures of économique growth.
